Well we have done it! After a quick rush for Starbucks at the Dubai airport, we are safely aboard our final flight home! This is the point when everyone is tired and ready to be home.

Parents, please check our flight status and be on time to pick up your child tomorrow afternoon. I have seen it before and it is a very sad scene when one kid is left standing alone watching everyone else being greeted.

We are on Emirates flight 215 coming from Dubai and scheduled to land at 12:50pm, Sunday February 26. See you all soon!

We are on our way home! Boarding the first flight to Dubai. I will update again when we are on the epic 15 hour flight back to LAX.

The Taj Mahal! We made it and it was impressive.  Beautifully intricate details made of semi-precious stones shaped as flowers set in marble.

We are on the van again for our five hour drive back to the Shanti Home. The long drive will be worth it because a proper Indian feast awaits us.

Our flight is scheduled to depart at 4:15am so I will update again when we are on the first flight to Dubai.

Quick little update, we are showered and sleeping in luxury at the Shanti Home tonight!
Greetings. I apologize for the late post today. We had a slight snag in our travel plans today. The flight out of Allahabad back to Delhi was cancelled so the airline provided us with a bus to the airport in Varanasi. We are now at the Varanasi airport waiting for our 10:30pm flight. The comfy beds at Shanti Home Boutique Hotel will be especially appreciated for a group of tired travelers. Despite the long day everyone has a great attitude about all the little detours.

We made our final goodbyes to our boys. There were tears, pictures, requests for us to return, smiles, and hugs. I can assure you, the faces of those boys have been engraved on our hearts.

Sorry this is short. We are boarding. I will update tomorrow from the Taj Mahal.

Good Morning.  As you can see, Mr Ackermann made several wedding arrangements on behalf of four families, hope you don't mind a dowry is now required of you.  Our friend Niemi spent time this afternoon dressing the girls in their new saris.

Today we spent time at the school Varughese started in 1993.  Our girls really enjoyed interacting with the little girls at the school.  The greetings were tentative at first, but the children soon warmed up to our group and so began the games, pictures, smiles, and hand shakes.  After an hour at the school we left for lunch and a little shopping.

The drive home was interesting, to say the least, because our team of 12 'fit' in a comfy 7 passenger car!!  Pastor Varughese had to leave us to return home and begin preparations for our dinner this evening at his home.  It was a memorable part of the trip indeed!  Not to worry, we have a video of that as well.

Tonight is our last night at the boys home because we fly back to Delhi tomorrow afternoon.  Pastor Varughese is hosting us for dinner at his home tonight.  This is a special night because he will share some of his story of how God directed him in his current ministry. It is quite inspiring and humbling to hear of his journey.

This is one of the healthiest teams I have ever led.  All stomachs are handling the food well so health is good! Thank you for your prayers!

Not the best quality photo but gives you a little idea of the action right now.  It is about 7:40pm and we have played almost non stop since 1pm this afternoon.  This picture is the scene from the balcony onto the patio where laughter, random games with soccer balls, duck duck goose, and wonderful conversations are happening.  We are eating a later dinner because so many unforgettable memories are currently being made.  After a day like today, I think I can speak for the team when I say our hearts are full.

Tomorrow we will visit the school, have lunch in town and do some shopping before returning for more games and smiles.  It is difficult to believe we have only two more days with our boys.  I can assure you it will be a heartbreaking day when we have to drive  away.

What a fantastic first full day with the boys! I thought today's blog should come from the team so here are some of their impressions. "it was really cool to learn how to play cricket.". "they are really smiley and enjoy the same game for hours. They don't get bored.". "they are really encouraging and make you feel like you are good at sports.". Mr Ackermann when asked about his favorite part of the day, aside from the cows, "you milk cows. You run with bulls." This comment is causing the room to burst into hysterical laughter as I type it because Mr Ackermann did some bull and buffalo herding this afternoon. Don't worry, we have video of the spectacle and it will be included in our trip video.

We are quite tired from such a full day of playing out in the sun all day. Parents, yes we distributed sunscreen twice during the day. :-). I think it will be an early night for us all.

With Nitan and Kishan

The girls and their new friends

The girls and Jitendar

Our boys learning a little cricket.
Good Morning from Allahabad!! We had a wonderful breakfast and team debrief this morning. Then everyone unloaded donations from bags and it was quite overwhelming. Thank you to all of you who contributed! The bed is overflowing with medicine, school supplies, games, and toiletries! What a blessing you all are to Pastor Varughese and his ministry here. Thank You!

The younger boys are at school so the team is outside playing frisbee, cricket, and taking pictures with the older boys. It is a beautiful sunny day and a perfect start to the next four days here with the boys. Everyone is healthy and sleeping well.

Massive traffic jams so about four hours later we have arrived at the boys home and are settling in. The older boys stayed up to greet us at midnight. After unloading the luggage we attempted to learn names. It will take us all another day or two to get them correct, but it was a fun start. Everyone is exhausted and ready for our first night at the boys home.
A slight schedule adjustment today but the team adapted and had great attitudes. The boat ride along the Ganges River was longer than usual. Our poor boat man was exhausted after almost two hours of rowing us around. We observed many Hindu worshipers bathing in the river, celebrating Shiva's birthday, and honoring their Hindu faith. It was a fascinating journey along the Ganges River. Dinner was the best so far and now we are back in crazy traffic driving to the boys home in Allahabad. It is about a two hour drive so I expect many attempts at napping. Although I don't anticipate much success because if it isn't a honking horn it will be the bumpy roads that keep you from nap time.

Pastor Varughese said the boys are so excited and are all allowed to stay up until our arrival! I think it will be a rather tired first greeting, but the real fun will begin tomorrow. As I mentioned before, the roads are bumpy and the driving is crazy, and so to not risk car sickness I will finish today's entry. Good night and thank you for the prayers.

We are finally on our Kingfisher flight from Delhi to Varanasi. I will update again on the road from the Ganges to the boys home.
Messages from the rest of the team. Juliet - "Mommy and daddy, I love you.". Sophie - "Hi mom and dad, having fun. See you in a week." Danny - "see you in seven days." Michael - "I miss my cat."
We have a slight delay leaving Delhi to Varanasi so we are having some snacks. I have a few personal messages for you all. Erin - "Mom and dad, I miss you and love you.". Georgia - "Tell my parents namaste.". Annie - "Love you, wonderful and handsome father.". Ali - "Thank you for my wonderful birthday presents.". Hannah - "Having so much fun. Miss you guys. Can't wait to tell you everything. 😄"

I will send more messages in a few minutes when we are with the rest of the team.

Sorry, hit 'send' on accident. Anyway, we are impressed with this group so parents, 'well done'. Tomorrow is Varanasi and the Ganges River. We will take a boat ride along the river and it will be a definite sensory overload day, but the best part is that we meet the boys tomorrow afternoon! The reason we have travelled so far and I can't wait!

Everyone is healthy and enjoying the journey. Please pray for us when you can. It makes a difference! Thank you!!

It is only 9pm but everyone is exhausted and it feels like midnight so we are in bed ready to call it a day. An eye-opening, humble, and culture shock filled day.

Before dinner we met to debrief the day. Here are some of the comments during this time. "I felt truly alive today.". "I felt really welcomed at all the churches and it wasn't for show, they were genuinely happy I was there.". "Traffic is crazy.". "I was reminded to appreciate how I have been blessed in my life.".

Overall, we are so impressed with his team of students. They are fully engaged in the process and experience here. Often students start off clinging to the one friend they joined the trip with and miss out on connecting with new friends. This team has already stepped out of their comfort zones and p

The team at our first church visit.  We were greeted at each church with a beautiful flower lei and heartfelt songs of worship in Hindi.  It was a blessing to share in worship together this morning with three congregations.  The language was different but the sentiment of worship was the same.  Hannah, Erin, and Georgia shared at each of the services.

We have just finished a filling lunch of spicy curries, naan, and rice.  Everyone is tired but we are fighting the sleep monsters with a shopping trip then some team binding and relaxing back at the YMCA.

Saturday, February 18, 2012

The team is settled in their beds at the YMCA. I am sharing a room with Ali and Anna......as soon as the clock struck midnight our little room we celebrated Ali's Sweet 16!!!! There will be more celebrating in the morning after some much needed sleep....in a bed rather than upright on the plane. Good night all 😄

A little weary from so much travel but excited to be in India!!  Tomorrow we will visit some of Pastor Varughese's churches, shop, relax, and acclimate to Indian culture.
After a long 15 hour flight of movies, sleeping, not sleeping, and more movies we arrived safely in Dubai for a quick layover. The team is now on the final flight to Delhi! It will be a nice 3 hour flight. I will update again when we arrive in Delhi.
